This extra large rattan wicker basket has 4 handles so it can be lifted by two people and the handles are woven into the structure of the basket so they do not drop off unlike most other baskets on the market. It makes a beautiful log basket or substantial laundry basket and can also be used in the garden as rattan is strong, durable and shower proof. The rattan vine can be cultivated and gathered from the rainforest without causing damage and these baskets are made by villagers who live in the forest and weave a unique mix of wild, unprocessed rattan.

The Earth Basket workshops are a small but critical part of The Katingan Project, an ERC which aims to restore and conserve 200,000 hectares of peat swamp forest through reducing emissions from deforestation in Central Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo in Indonesia.

Emily Readett-Bayley is working with project zone communities to add value to the rattan industry by creating a market for the unique rattan products they can make, building on the local tradition of using the darker rattan they cannot sell to the factories.
